Richard Jaffe started his law career as a paralegal and worked his way up to partner.
He began working at Cohen and Jaffe while earning his law degree from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center of Huntington, N.Y. at night.
As a paralegal, he drafted motions and memoranda of law, and conducted extensive legal research, focusing on medical malpractice, insurance liability and health care issues.
He went on to join the New York personal injury law firm as an associate, representing seriously injured individuals. Later, as a junior partner, he oversaw the firm’s paralegal and investigative team. Today, as a name partner, he continues to practice in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice, insurance law, product liability, lead paint poisoning, and municipal liability, while managing the workflow for five associate attorneys and the firm’s support staff.
He was admitted to the New York State and District of Columbia Bars in 1995. He is also licensed to practice law in New Jersey and in the U.S. District Court in the Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts of New York.
He deals with a large number of major insurance carriers every day, with emphasis on legal issues relating to accident liability, medical malpractice, and entitlement of medical exams in no-fault cases.
Jaffe has represented thousands of victims in auto accidents, medical malpractice, and premises liability and negligence cases. He has helped these individuals and their families collect millions of dollars, allowing them to recover, get back on their feet, and enjoy a quality of life.
Among Cohen & Jaffe’s notable personal injury verdicts and settlements are:
- $2.4 million for a boy who suffered brain damage caused by lead poisoning
- $1.5 million for a woman who sustained a fractured leg and zygomatic arch when a vehicle in which she was a passenger was involved in a two-car collision
- $215,000 for an automobile accident victim who suffered a shoulder fracture
Jaffe is active in the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers in America, the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, and the National Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.
He participates in a number of pro bono activities, including as a small claims court arbitrator, Supreme Court mediator, and as a firefighter and medic with the Jericho Fire Department.
Jaffe also speaks fluent Spanish, enabling him to effectively represent the Latino community.

“Richard Jaffe is an attorney who has performed several small to moderately involved legal projects for me. I can say that I have never had an attorney as easy to work with, show attention to detail and my needs, as well as experience the results I was looking for. He is without hesitation my first line ‘go to’ lawyer for any need that arises. I endorse him enthusiastically and without qualifications.”
